Don't want your car to get stolen? Ditch the remote start, Toronto police warn

68 vehicles have been reported stolen so far this year in Toronto, nearly twice as many as at this point last year, with an alarming rise in warm-up thefts, police Chief James Ramer says.

Fan of your car's remote starter? Like to leave the engine on to warm up while you go inside to finish getting ready?

You may want to reconsider.

Toronto police are issuing a stark warning over an increase in opportunistic car thefts from people leaving their cars running while unattended — presenting wannabe thieves with a golden opportunity to simply jump into a nice, warm vehicle and drive off.

Speaking to the Toronto police board Thursday, Chief James Ramer said that 68 vehicles have been reported stolen so far this year — nearly twice as many as at this point last year, with an alarming rise in warm-up thefts.

"Just last night we had an additional seven vehicles stolen and two of them were warm-ups," Ramer said.

He said police will soon be providing new messaging to discourage people from leaving their cars on the driveways to warm up.

"That offence has doubled and, no doubt with the next 30 to 60 days of the colder weather this year, we're going to see this continue if precautions are not taken," he said.

Ramer added that car owners should not leave their keys hanging near the door, and should instead keep them in a secured container farther inside the house. Car thieves are increasingly adopting sophisticated technologies to mess with key's electronic signals and can get inside the vehicle "within a minute" if they're not properly hidden, he explained.

Ramer made the comments in a discussion on the rise in car thefts as an "issue of importance" for the city.

Organized vehicle theft and carjacking (when an occupant is forced to hand over a car under the threat of violence) has been on a rise in Toronto in recent years, Ramer said, noting that the city has registered a "troubling" 81 per cent increase in car thefts since 2017.

Relatively common makes such as Honda, Toyota, Ford and Lexus are the most-targeted vehicles, but high-end models such as Land Rover, BMW and Mercedes have also attracted thieves.

Luxury types such as Rolls-Royce and McLaren have also been targeted, usually for export purposes.

A recent Star investigation found the insurance rates were significantly increasing for car models that are often targeted by theft.

In an effort to deal with the rise in thefts, Ramer told the board that he has expanded the mandate of the service's Hold Up Squad. The force is also in the process of redeploying officers and creating a centralized unit that will target organized crime groups that are profiting from the theft of vehicles.

He noted such a unit existed before but was disbanded in 2017 due to budget constraints, the timing of which corresponds to "the increase we've seen in auto theft."

Restarting this unit, Ramer added, will represent a $2.1 million reallocation of police resources.

"In 2021, a number of vehicles were used in the commission of other crimes including shootings, both here in Toronto as well as in outside jurisdictions," Ramer added.

Towards the end of last year, Toronto city council also voted to ask the provincial government to create a task force that would help combat the "out of control criminal activity" that car theft has become.
