In an historic technological institution, the Schoolhouse of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) offers exciting new research and educational opportunities aligned with Rensselaer'south vision of the New Polytechnic Found. The School's five departments offering innovative and interdisciplinary programs of report at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The undergraduate programs include majors in humanities, social science, and arts disciplines; collaborations and dual majors for students of all schools; and a core curriculum that is a common element in the course of study for all Rensselaer students. The graduate programs in HASS offer unique opportunities for the study of the technological world, its touch on society, and its potential contributions to social, cultural, and artistic goals. All HASS students have a broad choice of electives representing Rensselaer's global vision and delivery to personal excellence through new studies in arts, communications, and culture every bit well as to the traditional areas of liberal arts and social sciences.

HASS programs at Rensselaer give every student shut contact with outstanding faculty members. Those faculty—scholars and practitioners themselves—create programs that are distinctive for research applications at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students also have access to field work and studio experiences; internships and professional co-op opportunities; maker spaces, multimedia laboratories, game development and estimator facilities; traditional and experimental musical ensembles; and opportunities to cross boundaries and to develop new interdisciplinary projects. These programs integrate the intellectual depth and the applied feel needed for leadership careers in business, non-profit corporations, government and regime-related organizations, higher education, and arts. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs are offered in five caste-granting departments, including Arts; Cerebral Science; Communication and Media; Economics; and Science and Technology Studies. In addition, students can major in interdisciplinary programs that integrate scientific and technical tools with the arts, social sciences, communication, and the humanities. These include Electronic Media, Arts, and Communication (EMAC); Pattern, Innovation, and Society (DSIS); and Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences (GSAS).

Overview of Undergraduate Programs

In all curriculum areas, HASS strives to provide flexibility whenever possible. Independent study credits are individualized reading or research credits that a student proposes to a faculty fellow member whose expertise covers a specific expanse of interest. HASS Cadre Program

As part of their B.S. degree programme, all Rensselaer undergraduates have a selection of HASS courses referred to as the HASS core. This core is the foundation of undergraduate education. Through it, students develop the skills necessary for personal and professional success, and they also begin to explore the social and cultural areas of study and bug of debate that are important in the global society of the twenty-first century.


The core consists of 24 credit hours, or vi courses distributed to beget students a latitude of perspective across the various disciplines also equally a more in-depth experience in at to the lowest degree one expanse. To ensure depth in the HASS core requirement, students must as well accept at least 2 courses (8 credits) within a unmarried department surface area's code (one STSS and one STSH class can be applied as depth), at least one of which is taken at an avant-garde level (above thousand). Transfer students from an accredited collegiate program who have completed at least one college year merely who come to Rensselaer with offset-year condition may authorize for additional core transfers at the discretion of the HASS Associate Dean for Bookish Affairs. Transfer students entering Rensselaer at the sophomore level or higher up are not limited in the number of courses they may transfer for HASS core credit. All others must take at to the lowest degree 16 credit hours of their HASS cadre at Rensselaer.

Enrolled Rensselaer students wishing to have a HASS course for credit at some other accredited institution must obtain prior approval for the grade from the HASS Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Applicants must replenish a catalog clarification of the proposed grade and syllabus, and a completed re-create of Rensselaer'southward Transfer Credit Approval form to the HASS Pupil Services Hub on the 4th flooring of the Sage edifice.

Special Undergraduate Opportunities

Overview of Graduate Programs

The Schoolhouse of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences offers both master'south and doctoral level programs.

Master's Programs

HASS offers four 30-credit master'due south degrees (M.Southward.) inside the departments of Advice and Media, Cerebral Science, Economics, and Scientific discipline and Applied science Studies. The master's programs in Cognitive Science and Scientific discipline and Applied science Studies limit awarding to internal students only.

Co-terminal Degree Opportunities

Rensselaer'due south co-terminal program provides undergraduates the opportunity to pursue a master's caste while maintaining their undergraduate Rensselaer funding. HASS offers co-terminal opportunities in Cognitive Studies, Advice and Media, Economics, and Science Technology Studies. Co-terminal students can pursue a master's degree in the aforementioned bookish discipline as their bachelor's caste or take an interdisciplinary approach, applying to a graduate plan outside of their undergraduate department.

Doctoral Programs

Rensselaer understands that in an increasingly circuitous world in which the most significant scientific and social bug lie at the intersection betwixt multiple traditional disciplines, individuals often need a broader range of knowledge than can exist obtained through the study of a single discipline.
